Hi,

Thank you for finding your way to this message about our film.

I want to give you some background about “Bones Brigade: An Autobiography,” how and why it came to be and why we are stoked you want to be part of it.

Rewind to the fall of 2002 -- Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero and Mike McGill asked me if I would meet with them to talk about a project they had in mind. They told me how much they all liked my film that had just been released, “Dogtown and Z Boys,” and how they felt their own legacy as the Bones Brigade during the 1980s had great potential to also be made into a documentary. They asked if I would consider directing it. I declined. I felt I didn’t have it in me to make another film where I was both the director and one of the characters, having created the Bones Brigade team – there was no way I could work around that.

Over the years the guys kept at me -- and I kept saying no. Finally in the summer of 2010, Lance called again. During the course of our conversation he told me he and the guys were even more eager than ever to make the film. He explained that they were all now older than Tony Alva and I were at the time we made “Dogtown”. That seemed impossible – and this is what finally hit me. They were grown men. They were fathers with their own kids who were the same ages they were when they got on the Bones Brigade. They were still skateboarding and at the top of their game. So, on that phone call I told Lance I would make the film.

I came into it figuring it would be a small film, a quiet release, direct to DVD for a skateboard-centric fan base, no film festival run and nothing like Dogtown. But that all changed the day we began production.

The cameras started rolling. Rodney Mullen was the first team member I interviewed and he set the tone for everyone, opening up in ways I had never expected. They shared personal feelings that I, as both director and mentor for this team, was totally unprepared for. They talked about their fears, the depth of their camaraderie, their feelings of isolation, the toll of competition, and the shadow side of success. They talked about growing up from boys to men while they were on the Bones Brigade. They reminded me of situations and experiences I had long forgotten about.

When shooting was done a week later I knew we had something very unique and special. And I knew we had a good film or at least the potential for one. Now all we had to do was figure out a way to assemble it in a compelling manner. I had originally thought that I would edit this one like I used to do with the Bones Brigade videos – but this was simultaneously a big and intimate story and I wanted someone with an objective point of view, so we hired editor Josh Altman -- one of the smarter decisions I made as director.

By late summer 2011 we had our first cut. Based on the “what have we got to lose” theory, we took a chance and submitted it to the Sundance Film Festival. In November we were told that out of 12,000 submissions, “Bones Brigade, An Autobiography” had been selected to be in the 2012 festival. We were blown away.

January 2012, there we were in Park City, Utah – the Bones Brigade team (Tony had a contractual obligation to be in Australia) together for the first time in over 28 years – hanging out till 3:00 AM in a large snow cabin and showing our new film to festival audience standing-ovations. It was cosmic to say the least.

As skateboarders, as people that have always lived on the outside, have always had to sneak over fences or through the back door, have always had to create our own terrain, we’ve decided to put that ethic towards how we release “Bones Brigade: An Autobiography.” We turned down all of the conventional offers for distribution when we came out of the festival in favor of doing it ourselves.

So your involvement on the Bones Brigade site is part of the process of making our campaign work – there’s no middle-man here -- it’s us and you. Everything we have to offer in regards to our film will be from our website. And it starts right now, on http://bonesbrigade.com. Go get your own classic Bones Brigade photos and post them to Instagram with the hashtag #bonesbrigade. After 2,000 photos were posted, we unlocked the premiere of the film's trailer... and a free download of The Search For Animal Chin. Yes, free. For every skater on Earth. Please help us spread the word.

All of us are super excited about the film. It’s the film we all aspired to make and we’ve been having an amazing time showing it at film festivals to skaters AND non-skaters alike - and attending screenings Vans has been putting on all over the world from Philadelphia to China to Brazil. Now we look forward to sharing it with all of you.

Brad McClain continued his bowl busting assault on Scandinavian skateparks this summer with a gnarly barrage of tricks at Malmö, Sweden’s Ultrabowl IV competition. For his relentless efforts he was awarded the top spot on the podium and pocketed plenty of Euros to take back home with him. Malmö’s Fernando Bramsmark gave Brad a good run for his money as did Kevin Kowalski in the six-man final heat of the afternoon, but the Nor Cal native’s combined lines and heavy hitting stunts left a huge impression and a stack of points on the judges score sheets. The victory was clearly his.

Check the Skate Malmö site for more info and recap clips from the webcast and the World Cup Skateboarding site for a selection of images from the event.

Santa Barbara, CA – Monday, August 20th, 2012 – Filmmaker Stacy Peralta today announces the worldwide premiere of the trailer for his new critically-acclaimed film, BONES BRIGADE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY. The “unlock” process, hosted on www.animalchin.com, is an Instagram campaign encouraging every skater on Earth to post their classic Bones Brigade-related images with the hashtag #bonesbrigade. It’s time to blow the dust off those ‘80s shots featuring questionable skate fashion, favorite Bones Brigade graphics, maybe even that photo of you with Tony Hawk’s infamous McSqueeb haircut. After 2,000 images are posted, any visitor to the site will be able to view the film’s trailer and download THE SEARCH FOR ANIMAL CHIN absolutely free. The Bones Brigade themselves will select the best of the 2,000 images submitted and use them as artwork for a special film project this fall.

“We are very excited because we're releasing Bones Brigade: An Autobiography primarily by ourselves, in a new and modern way,” says Stacy Peralta, the film’s director and mentor of the original Bones Brigade. “The only place to fully experience the film will be through our Bones Brigade web site; where myself, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Rodney Mullen and Tommy Guerrero will interact directly with fans. The trailer premiere, new site and free download is our way of including fans right from the start in the process of releasing the film. I hope they have fun and share it with everyone who loves skateboarding, its history and the Bones Brigade.”

In addition to downloading The Search For Animal Chin for free to celebrate the film's 25th Anniversary, fans are also invited to email the filmmakers and request a screening in their town prior to the film’s official release. Fans should send their emails to paul@skateone.com by Aug 23, 2012.

Here are the detailed screening request instructions, straight from Paul: “In the subject write BB screening. Include the name of your city, how many skaters are in your area, the names of your city's skateshops, what theater should screen it, why choose your city and any other useful info that will help us in our planning. The more you send us, the better. We’re also working with our distributors throughout the world and will reach out to you who live overseas for those countries if we need any assistance.”

Official theatrical and DVD release dates for the film are forthcoming and will be posted soon on www.bonesbrigade.com. BONES BRIGADE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY premiered to standing ovations at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
