I would put up a examples up against MV as the right way to do things in business. Tony Hawk, starts Birdhouse with PW, sticks with it and has been very successful. Lance Mountain, starts the Firm, sticks with it, finally decides to close it down without screwing anyone ( skaters or vendors ), is successful moving on with Flip. Rodney Mullen, gives Rocco money, has to do jobs he does not want to do with World to keep it going, gets a huge buyout and then starts Almost and Tensor. Steve Caballlero, stays loyal to one company even thru hard times, is still with them today and does just fine for himself. Tommy G, starts Real / Deluxe with other guys, sticks with it, is successful today. Mike McGill, starts his own skate shop, sticks with it, and is successful. Just wanted to toss this out there. Sometimes I think folks might mistake MV's lack of personal resolve in the arena of business as his " rebel " attitude. Try keeping a struggling company afloat and skating. That takes personal resolve.

  • Yea, I think Mike V just has illusions as to what being a business owner is really all about. He's like the successful musician who doesn't like being a successful musician, kurt Cobain for example. He sent demo tapes to every label on the planet, hoping to sign a deal. Becomes famous and hated being famous because the label and MTV dictated his musical direction. If you want to be successful, you need to "sell out" to a degree. If you want to run a skate company, the market is going to dictate what you make and how you make it, regardless of your personal ideas. I think that's his biggest problem, he wants people to want his stuff and he wants complete control over his products, but that can only go so far. At some point you need to realize that in order to maintain success, you need to cave in a little, to someone. You can either be metallica or you can be overkill, you can't be overkill and have the success of metallica.
  • SoCal has a bunch of of new Vallely Elephant decks? The Lightning bolt shape is rad!
  • I'm in the camp that thinks Mike V is an egotistical dick. Couldn't give a shit how good a skater he is/was, from all I've read, heard and seen there's nothing humble about him at all...and that makes it hard for me to even watch the dude skate anymore
  • All I want is a Powell Vallely Elephant! Wish they would re-issue that deck again. I missed out big time the last round. Had the red and later the silver/grey in my youth.

    droooooool!!!!!

    (not my pics btw)
  • Weird how they all disappeared.... Seemed like there were a ton of those reissues floating around, and for cheap, after he left the last time
  • dont forget mullen also started a-team and as much as im not a fan of dwindle that was my favorite company from there
  • I'm with the Doc on this......I'm thinking August/September for the return.......
  • There is a guy on snb who works at Select, he posted this overnight.

"Yes Mike V. has quit Elephant. I work at Select and we have the New
Lightming Bolt, Poacher and Revolution decks for Mike V in stock now. We
made some before he quit and these will be the last Elephant Mike V.
Decks. The ND Mammoth never went into production so you will not see
    that for Elephant."
  • It is kind of impressive when you think about all the reasons he quit other teams and started his own. He quit the other teams because he wanted control of his career. So he created his own company and started his own team. ... only to quit for the same reason. Like he forgot he was the boss. I'm waiting for him to post some diatribe on his site trashing himself for not allowing himself to control his own career.
  • Hahaha, yeah... right
  • dont worry he will write a post about it
  • Of that I'm sure, just not one trashing himself
  • Elephant Skateboards without the Elephant makes no sense. It would be like Birdhouse Skateboards without the Birdman.
  • Dude, I SERIOUSLY doubt it'll continue
  • yea companies usually end at some point without the original owner
  • HMC who works at Select said that Elephant would continue with Jason A.,Kyle B.,Neal H. Jason Adams has been doing most of their artwork/deck shapes/promotion of the brand for a long time. I think with Jason Adams in charge and Select distributing it could last.
  • his history has proven that he is destined to wreck everything he does
