I was wanting to pick up a set of NOS G-Bones natty's, 64/90's for my claw... I plan on riding this deck and was wondering would 30 year old wheels be skate-able?
Yeah man, I have bought NOS StreetStyles and ridden them, among others.
You might be disappointed in the cost/benefit ratio however. While you can't get 90A reissues, I find that the older wheels are actually about 7 A's off the scale. So a NOS 90A rides very much like a reissue 97A.
Not because time changed it; for whatever reason, modern Powell wheels just ride softer. Comparing a modern Powell 97A to an OJ 97A is night and day different in hardness. (And speed and slidability too - my opinion.) I know that shouldn't be so, but it is.
I had og T bones back in the day, 95A and 98A. I also have 97A reissue G Bones. They roll very similar underfoot, and would catch on stones or tree nuts. But they slide differently. The og's were easy to slide, the reissues more difficult on some surfaces. With surface wear on the wheels I am leaning towards saying the reissue 97's resemble the og 95's. A few years back I bought some og T Bones, and if I set up my claw, I'll more than likely be using them Bonely!
Hmm. Not that it's THAT relevant but I'm still riding my og tbones since...guess when...94! I've trimmed them in diameter and they're around 60 now but they're the nicest smooth wheels I've had and I just don't see a reason to change them.
Thanks for all of the opinions... I went ahead and ordered the OG Natural G-Bones. If they're ok to ride, I'm cool with a little extra coin. I mostly ride parks anyway (Assault WaffleStomper, Flip Vato P2, & Birdhouse Hawk Pool Shape deck all with Bones spf's), this will just be for beer runs, goofing around with the kids, and of course the nostalgia factor!
Old Skull shipped these fast, got em Monday. I have to say they seem a little softer than the reissue's which is what I wanted. I haven't had a chance to take them out but they're mounted and ready to go. I'll get up some pics shortly.
Some snaps... Can't seem to decide on yellow or black rails? I'd like to match up the black rails with a black jaw bone but can't find any black jaw bones... So it's either yellow rails and jaw bone or black rails yellow jaw bone...
@SK8ER I used photobucket, click on the direct link to the right of the photo to copy. The when you want to post here, click on the attachment link drop down, paste link and hit enter... hopefully that makes sense.
Well I found a black Powell jaw bone to match the black rails so that's the route I'm going.
Thanks @WakeInFright, I want the look of the board I remember. Obviously, it's not exact. The greens and such look great @sk8er but it doesn't have the right feel/look for me.
When I do eventually set mine up I will be using my white Tracker Aggros trucks, og blue T Bones, blue risers, and I have to find the right blue rails. Any thoughts on what rails? I want them to be beefier than rib bones so they can be closer to the edge of the board!

And thanks!

Check out Rad Railz. BEEFY! Same bolt spacing as new rib bones.
