NOS/Used vs Reissues

Like a lot of you, I ride some really old shit. I use tons of NOS or lightly used wheels, vintage stage I-V indys, a few 40+ year old decks. Never had any problems. Only thing necessary is changing out super old bushings or blown out pivot cups for better turns and using some new bones swiss.

I’ve heard that reissue wheels by Powell or Santa Cruz use different formulas than way back which is why I stick to NOS (can anyone confirm this? I try to get as close to an old school experience as possible). Lately I’ve been told that over the years urethane changes. It hardens and becomes more brittle/chalk like. It doesn’t bounce back into shape as well and gives off a deader pop. Supposedly the core separates as well. In my experience, my old wheels haven’t failed me. They don’t chunk off, the pop and rebound is fine, I can get some squeeze outta them (I don’t go below 90a so they’re on the harder side already) and they’re a comfortable ride. I mainly do street and am able to ride through fairly rough terrain. Even lightly used wheels I got my hands on hold up when inspected/tried out. Anyone ever compare the old vs new or had any experiences with old wheels (or new wheels) giving them trouble?

Another thing is decks. A few comments here about how old decks are better made got me thinking. They say the nature of the wood changes, it gets weaker and the glue that keeps the layers together loses its strength. But I got a few vintage decks from 85-87 and they’re fine. They’re in “semi-retired” status since I don’t want to destroy them but when I bring them out for a shred, they hold up. Way back in the day when it was my only set up I put my ‘85 Slasher through so many ollie and kick flip attempts; it never failed me. Ditto my old Jim Gray Blockhead. If I could get my hands on more lightly used or NOS vintage decks for a decent price, I’d definitely be using those.

Main question is what do you guys think about this? Prefer the old stuff? Think it’s better to stick to newer materials? Are the formulas and manufacturing today inferior to back then? I personally will stick to the old stuff as much as I can. Still buy reissue decks if they’re well made and fairly era correct but if the wheels are way off from the original experience then I’m heading to eBay or one of the shops that have NOS shit.

  • I’m a bit of column A and a bit of column B. I like some NOS and some NU.

How are your NOS wheels holding up? Mine are still great. No flatspots, chunking, lots of pop. I have been tempted to try some old school rat bone reissues; I still have a few NOS Rat Bone IIs stored away that I bought 10 years ago but I prefer the fat shape of the OGs. Some dudes try to sell trashed ones for way too much, lightly used are also pretty up there. Can hardly find NOS, that’s a waiting game on its own.

Edit: did a search. Someone is selling NOS Rat Bones for around 500CAD. Seriously, what the fuck? These people are insane.
  • that is ok some ppl charge that much for old stickers and shirts llllooollll
  • Shirts are even worse! Some people are trying to get away with charging 1k!
  • yep and i have to refrain myself from messaging them and saying "do u actually fucking think someone is going to buy that for that price"
  • You’ll see those same listings up for years but they never get the hint. Even finally found a Shred shirt but for 800? I’ll pass.
  • Rn my deck is a mid 80s Sims Buzz that was super cheap on Ebay b/c all the graphics were worn off, and it's a tank. I'm on OG Gullwing Street Shadows too, and they are still great. As far as old wheels, though, it's been a mixed bag for me, so I don't mess around with them anymore, instead relying on Dragons or my (depleted) stockpile of Bombers.

This ad is completely BURNED into the back of my brain. Check out the full June 1987 issue of Thrasher here...

Post a pic of your Buzz if you can @ghostbuster !
  • @ghostbuster That’s a rad find. I recently bought a pair of 85a Rat Bones reissues. Never skated this soft. I’m usually fine on rougher surfaces but I wanna see how they are with getting me some more speed. Figured it’s time to put these reissues to the test. I imagine anything softer than 90a NOS wheels will not hold up as well as the harder ones; I don’t wanna have dem shits fall apart mid sesh after hunting em down. One thing that comes to mind regarding the reissue formulas is while OJ/Santa Cruz and a few other companies still used TDI urethane which is now illegal due to toxicity (so their reissues will definitely be different), Powell innovated the MDI formula which as far as I know can still be used today. If their formulas are as close as possible to back then, even better for me. And my buddy rides Dragons! They’re great wheels that live up to their reputation.

@VatoRat Classic ad. Just screams 1987!

That ad brings back some memories. Did anyone have a Pharaoh? Mine is the "Slight Buzz;" it's in pretty bad shape cosmetically-- the yellowjacket or wasp or whatever is pretty much gone.
  • I’m not sure who owns Sims and Zorlac. It’s a shame that we will never get any reissues from Sims and especially Zorlac.
  • Zorlac reissues would be amazing
  • I also wish Powell would put modern truck hole patterns like they use to on their reissues. I don’t like having to drill holes for a deck that I’ve spent $100 on so I can skate ace trucks on it.
  • I have the opposite problem. With the old non-BB reissues I’d have to drill old school hole patterns so I can use my OG indys. I’m also a total purist. Nowadays reissue decks are made in Mexico. That and them being way more expensive makes me reluctant to buy as much as I used to despite the OG hole patterns.
  • They could do both old and new truck hole patterns and then everyone is happy.
  • Interesting how the latest BB series has been seriously discounted in some stores in Australia because they just aren’t selling.
  • ppl are probably more worried about gas and stuff
  • That is radical!
  • Amazing skills.
